Human Papilloma Virus (HPV; also known as genital warts) (viral)

Incidence:                    
20 million infected in US
5.5 million new cases annually for US
50-70% of sexually active adults are HPV(+)25% of Americans 12+ has HPV
Transmission:
Direct skin-to-infected skin contact. Can be spread through oral, anal and vaginal sex, mutual masturbation, mother to child (rare)
Symptoms: 
Sometimes no symptoms
Could be 6 months before symptoms develop but are still contagious
Small, flat flesh-colored or cauliflower looking bumps (warts).  
Results:            
-Reoccurrence/persistent warts
-Pre-cancerous changes
-Leading cause of cervical cancer
-Labor and Delivery complications
Treatment:
Liquid nitrogen (freezing), laser, topical meds, surgical removal; warts may be removed, but underlying viral infection can’t be cured (recurrence is a problem)
Risk Factors:
Early sexual experience
Multiple partners
Association of sex and alcohol
Partners having multiple partners
Anal sex
Hispanic and Black race
