CHLAMYDIA (bacterial)

Incidence:                    
2.8 million/year annually in US. Greatest diagnosis are found in unmarried persons with 2+ sex partners within 1 year
50,000 females become infertile every year due to Chlamydia
Transmission:
Spread via sexual fluids through oral, anal and vaginal sex; mother to child
Symptoms: 
Men: none; burning with urination; white urethral discharge
Scrotal swelling; fever
Women: none (75% of those infected have no symptoms yet are sill contagious)
Vaginal discharge; bleeding after intercourse; uterine infection; tubal infection; lower abdominal pain
Leading cause of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Results:            
For women, if left untreated, 20-40% may develop PID. This can lead to: infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and tubal pregnancy.
For men, result is scrotal pain; risk of sterility
Treatment:
Antibiotic given within 7 days of contracting. Curable by 95%. If no treatment is received, there is a 30% of infertility. Greatest risk is for women.

Unprotected sex
Association of sex and alcohol
Multiple sex partners
History of previous STDs
HIV positive
